The City Government of Manila has partnered with Globe Telecom and the country’s leading mobile wallet GCash to innovate the lives of ordinary Filipino students and introduce the wonders of digital, cashless financial transactions to them.

Around 1,000 students under the scholarship program spearheaded by Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso will receive their allowances and monetary benefits through the GCash digital app platform. They will also receive a corresponding GCash Mastercard, which they can use to cash out money. The card also doubles as an official identification card signifying their status as a bona fide scholarship beneficiary.

Globe meanwhile powers mobile Internet connectivity for the students with its revolutionary GoWiFi service, which allows users to automatically connect to public hotspots in malls, coffee shops, restaurants, convenience stores, transport terminals and hubs, and many other sites.

GoWiFi ensure continuous and seamless Internet connectivity with its numerous hotspots across the country at present.

“This project with the city government of Manila is a big, important step in bringing financial inclusivity not only to the financially underserved sectors of society but also to the emerging generation of purely digital natives which are today’s youth,” said Globe chief executive officer Ernest Cu.

On its part, GCash lauds the city government of Manila for supporting such digital innovations and partnering with them to bring the benefits of a fully digital lifestyle closer to more Filipinos. “With GCash becoming part and parcel of the lives of thousands of students in Manila, they can finally enjoy ease and freedom in daily tasks such as buying snacks, paying for school supplies, topping up their load or even sending money to friends and family,” said GCash chief executive officer Anthony Thomas.

Moreover, GCash helps the youth start on a journey toward financial literacy and empowerment. “Innovative features such as GSave or Save Money allow students to start digital savings without the hassles of opening an account,” explained Thomas. On GCash, one can also start investing and eventually take care of important responsibilities such as paying bills.

“It is a truly digital lifestyle that are empowering these students with,” added Thomas.
